Welcome back to my continuing love affair with the non league game and particularly all things QPR related.
I'd like to say a big thanks to all those who took the time to email me over the last week. It's great to know you appreciated it. Don't forget if you have seen an ex QPR boy marking time on a grassy bog in the Thames estuary, feel free to let me know!
We will start again with the "FA Cup run" thieves of Vauxhall Motors. Following on from my suggestion last week that their promotion task may be difficult despite their games in hand, they had mixed fortunes this week wasting a midweek chance of points by drawing at Worksop Town. Then Saturday, they hit form and 5 goals against Frickley. However their chances of promotion seemed doomed as they are now 15 points adrift of Accrington Stanley with only 2 games in hand.
Closer to home then and following the fortunes of some of the players highlighted last week, it was a good weekend for Justin Cochrane. He inspired Hayes to a 4-0 victory over Enfield. Having been fouled himself, he confidently picked himself up and dispatched the spot kick with ease (ahem, QPR strikers, please take note!).
In the same division, Nicky Bull kept a clean sheet again this time against Harrow Borough, and reportedly made a string of fine saves. Elsewhere that target of ours, Craig McAllister was doing his best to ruin our chances of affording him by hitting the back of the net twice in a 5-1 win for Basingstoke over Borehamwood! Oi, Craig! Stop it now! At this rate, he'll be far too good for us!
"Far too good" would not have been something we could have said about one of our former (thankfully temporary) strikers, Carl Leaburn. The man who made Brett Angell look like Marco Van Basten has re-emerged at Grays Athletic. Obviously, he hasn't scored though.
Last week I reported on the ex players in the Conference and scandalously missed out an old favourite, Andy Sinton at Burton Albion. For this sin I received a deluge of emails reminding me of his whereabouts, and I humbly apologise. Many of you may have seen him on TV earlier this season on telly in the FA cup. Well he is still there and is still at the heart of Nigel Clough's team. Burton however are sliding towards the relegation places and a 3-2 defeat at Gravesend didn't help. I can't leave the conference without making a note of Mark Stein who helped himself to a hat-trick at lowly Kettering. Dagenham are now up into the Conference play off places.
So who else do I have news of this week? Well, thanks to Andy Burnside, we have found Hamid Barr again! He has been at several non-league teams since leaving us, but his latest home is Tonbridge Angels in the Dr Martens Eastern Division. Now the Angels aren't exactly setting the world alight, but you would expect them to do OK this season when you hear that Barr scored for them having been put through by ex Wycombe stalwart Paul Emblen. We'll see if this pairing does them any good. It didn't this week; they went down 2-1 to Burnham.
Also news of a far more heroic figure to R's fans. Dennis Bailey has been spotted playing at his 3,425th club. He too is in the Dr Martens League, but a step higher - in the premier, playing for Stafford Rangers this time. His 64th minute header sealed a win for the Rangers and keeps them in 3rd place in the Premiership table (sounds good doesn't it?!).
Oliver Stockwell sent in an email to me, and among the information, he asked me if I knew of the whereabouts of someone. Now I'm not sure I will be able to do this every week but as it happens, I succeeded! I found Sammy Koejoe! Now I know that he is not strictly non-league, but from what I understand he plays to similar crowds. I have found him at Austrian side SPG Wattens/Wacker of the Regionalliga West! Now this is no laughing matter. Don't get me wrong, I too remember Sammy keeping me entertained as he came off the bench in a QPR shirt. It always amused me that his arse would arrive at the pitch first, and when he burst down the line it would follow him about a yard behind. Good old "lead-pants", he certainly gave his all, even if it didn't end up in goals. But he seems to like it in Austria. SPG are top of the league and Sammy is the leagues top scorer with 29 goals this season! I hope someone is videoing him again!
Finally news of Karl Ready. For those who didn't know, he spent some of this season on a month to month contract at Aldershot, acquiring pretty much of a cult status. Eventually he disappeared, looking to play a little further up the chain. There is no truth in the rumour that he was forced out by the local residents, who showered the Aldershot board of directors with letters of complaint and bills for repairing their broken kitchen windows. It was rumoured last week he was having a trial at Cambridge United, and whilst he never exactly made himself a fans favourite, I personally wish him luck in finding a new team.
That's all for this week, don't forget to send me info if you have seen anyone around, and thanks again to those who did this week. If I haven't used your news, I will do, I'm just waiting for the appropriate moment.
