IT'S THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON
Saturday 3rd May 2008
by Ron Norris & Simon Skinner

So this is it, the final game of a rollercoaster season for Rangers. The worst squad in the league, a slick haired failure merchant for a boss and on the verge of going out of business has been replaced with a dynamic set of players, a manager that has restored our attacking verve and more money than we could ever wish to spend. West Brom are in town and will be looking for the result they need to wrap up a deserved Championship title.

TEAM NEWS

Akos Buzsaky has been ruled out of this one after his ankle injury flared up again after his sub appearance against Charlton. The club see little point in risking him so we he will be mothballed until pre season. Fitz Hall and Patrick Agyemang apparently both have a chance of making this one after many thought they would sit out the last knockings of the campaign. Hall apparently had a new groin injury (because that is far better than a recurrence of the old one…) and Agyemang is back in training after his hamstring injury. With Stewart suspended if Hall doesn’t make it then the terrifying prospect of Rehman against Miller and Phillips may haunt our final day!

Tony Mowbray is waiting on the fitness of James Morrison after he picked up a knock in the draw against Southampton that secured promotion. If he doesn’t make it then Chris Brunt will take his place in the side. It must be tough being Tony Mowbray! Roman Bednar has a slight knock but he will definitely be involved, most likely in the second half battering ram role.

A QUICK GUIDE TO OUR OPPONENTS

BAGGIES IN BRIEF: This season should have been a cakewalk for The Baggies. The best squad in the league playing the best football in the league should have seen them stroll to promotion. Such has been the nature of the league this season though, there is a very real chance that the team that go up as champions will have been beaten eleven times, which is incredible. They have had a triumvirate of strikers that would walk into any team in this division in Phillips, Miller and Bednar and they have been the spearhead of this campaign. And let’s all say thanks to them for hammering the final nail in Gregory’s coffin!

CLASH OF THE DAY: Zesh Rehman v. Kevin Phillips. If Fitz Hall isn’t fit enough to start then Rehman is likely to play at centre half. In the game at The Hawthorns earlier this season Rehman played at right back and got torn a new arse, he has improved since then but I can’t help thinking that the movement of Phillips will be too much for a player that has little chance of being at the club next season.

RANGERS VERSUS .....

LAST TIME OUT: “Rangers needed to steady the ship now. Instead they handed possession back to West Brom, tried to play offside with a line like a dog’s hind leg and conceded a second in a little over a minute. This time Miller himself burst through like a rampaging shire horse and smashed a shot through Camp.” West Bromwich Albion 5-1 Queens Park Rangers, Sunday 30th September 2007.

OTHER MEETINGS: The league head to head between the sides is pretty tight with twelve Baggies wins versus ten for the R’s. There have been a further seven stalemates. Rangers’ last win at home over West Brom came in January 2001 when goals from Chris Plummer and Sammy Koejoe wrapped up a 2-0 victory.

GENERAL INFORMATION

THE REFEREE

Paul Taylor is in charge for this one and I will always remember him best for sending Terrell Forbes off at Brighton following Kerry Mayo’s five second delayed collapse to the deck. So far this term he has booked 102 in 39 games and sent off 8. He hasn’t done an R’s game this season but he has taken West Brom against Charlton, a game the baggies won 4-2.

SIX DEGREES OF SEP-R-ATION: Matthew Connolly to Ishmael Miller. Connolly started his career at Arsenal and his debut for them came against West Brom. Jeremie Aliadiere scored both goals in an Arsenal League Cup win. He is now at Middlesbrough and scored his first goal for them against Manchester United. Danny Simpson was an unused sub for United and last season he enjoyed a successful loan spell at Sunderland. His boss at Sunderland was Roy Keane who was a team mate of Craig Beattie at Celtic. Beattie has since moved to The Hawthorns where he is a colleague of Ishmael Miller.

RON AND SIMON'S PREDICT-OFF
SIMON: The Baggies come to W12 knowing that a win will seal the title and to be honest, they only seem to know one way to play, all out attack. If Rangers can match them passing wise and cope with the movement of Phillips and the dynamism of Miller than there is a chance of a result. Oh, you also have to stop Greening, Brunt, Gera and Koren too! As it is, I think they will have the edge on the day and will wrap up a narrow win. 2-1 to The Champions.

RON: I actually think we'll lose, I really can't see West Brom letting the title slip from their grasp, we need our full first choice eleven to beat them and without key players in attack and defence I think we'll struggle. That said I'm three points behind Simon in the predict-off so I have to go for a different result from him if I am to win and hope it's spot on so for the competitions sake only - a one all draw!
